Yesterday we left Abraham walking through the wilderness, looking for his mountain. A question I asked you yesterday: "Has God ever asked you to do something crazy?"
I truly do hope so - because when we color outside the lines and we stretch out of our comfort zones - when we meet God in the "crazy" - we really get to see and feel, and hear and skirt the edges of His glory. When we are free falling into His grace - that is where, I think, God overwhelms.
Abraham was told to sacrifice His son. Abraham knew the voice of the Lord. The only way we can discern the quiet voice of the Lord, is by talking to Him.
Ok, stick with me a minute. Dave's car squeaks when he brakes. He can be gone for weeks on end, but the second his car approaches the driveway, and squeaks - the dogs start barking, and the kids start screaming, "Daddy's home!". We know the sound of his car. The dogs know the sound of his car. The sound of his car brings a smile to all of our faces...because we know he will be following shortly behind.
Abraham was THAT familiar with the sound of God's voice....okay pause here - cause that just makes me happy all over! He was that familiar with the voice of God...that he did not question, he did not run into the fix it room, he did seek advice from everyone he knew....
He knew the sound of his God's voice and he was going to obey - at whatever cost. He knew that when he heard the sound of God's voice - God was entering into his atmosphere.
Abraham knew the voice of his shepherd. I pray we all can discern the voice of our Shepherd, from the voice of he who is a wolf disguised in sheep's clothing. The voice of the Lord is usually quiet and steady...the voice of the enemy loud, obnoxious and intrusive. The ONLY way to discern the voice of God is to spend time with Him, and listen in obedience. Each interaction you have with Him imprints His voice on your heart. But, you have to spend quiet time with Him. Do you ever just listen to what God has to say to you? Do you ever go before Him in quiet reverence and allow Him to speak to you? Are you always chattering your laundry list of needs?
Spend time with Him this week. I, personally, love music - it speaks to me through the notes and the lyrics. I meet God in the folds and wrinkles of the crescendos and in the movement of the music. I try to be still and just listen. Try it this week. Put your headphones on, play some music and let Him speak to YOU this week. I pray that we all become so familiar with the voice of our Shepherd, that He is as familiar to our hearts and to our ears - as Dave;'s car is to our family. :- )
